What Is an Unlisted YouTube Video? (And How Creators Use Them to Earn)

December 22, 2025 · 1 min read · By Early Link Team

YouTube offers three visibility settings for videos: Public, Private, and Unlisted. Unlisted is the one most creators underuse — and it is the key to selling early access.

What Does Unlisted Mean?

An unlisted video does not appear in search results, your channel page, or recommendations. The only way to access it is with the direct URL. Anyone with the link can watch, but they cannot find it by browsing YouTube.

How Creators Use Unlisted Videos

  • Early access sales: Upload as unlisted, sell access via Early Link, then switch to public later.
  • Membership exclusives: Content only for paying members.
  • Portfolio or client work: Share specific videos without making them public.
  • Testing: Review a video before publishing publicly.

Unlisted vs Private

Unlisted: Anyone with the link can watch. Private: Only specifically invited Google accounts can watch (up to 50). For early access sales, unlisted is the correct setting — it allows any buyer to access the video with just the URL.

Can Unlisted Videos Be Monetized?

Unlisted videos can have ads enabled, but they typically generate minimal ad revenue since they are not discoverable. The real monetization opportunity is selling access to the unlisted link through Early Link, then earning full ad revenue once the video goes public.
